Legg Mason Inc. announced Monday its largest shareholder may take a larger stake in the company and will get two people added to the board of directors. Office Movers, the Baltimore-Washington area’s largest commercial office relocation company, was supposed to end this year by moving important documents out of the Obama White House and into storage. Instead, Office Movers and most other branches of the Kane Co., a 45-year-old institution in the D.C. area, abruptly shuttered, leaving nearly 1,000 people out of work just weeks before Christmas, customers scrambling for other options and competitors gearing up for new opportunities. What happened…

One of the biggest reasons I was attracted to pursuing journalism was the opportunity to interview people with interesting and unique jobs. The other reason was because I always get to learn something new. The ‘How I’ interviews I get to conduct almost weekly fulfill both of these desires for me. The simple Q&A style of the articles give me the rare opportunity to speak personally with an array of business owners and individuals in all kinds of fields. I hear startup success stories, have personal…

Good morning, I hope you have a productive start to your work week (for those of you who are actually at work this week). After a weird weekend of weather, things will settle down today into being more winter-like. Temperatures will stay in the mid-30s but the sun should at least be out for most of the day. Here are eight things to know to get your day started. The big story this weekend was obviously the tragic Interstate 95 crash. Two people were killed and dozens more were injured after an…

A historic waterfront building in Fells Point has hit the market, and is already drawing considerable interest. The Brown’s Wharf building, at 1613-1637 Thames St., was put up for sale in late November. JLL is brokering the sale for an undisclosed owner. Jay Wellschlager, a managing director at JLL who holds the listing, said he has already received “significant interest" from local, regional and national buyers. The building’s location in the heart of Fells Point makes it an attractive piece…

Jobs are returning in droves to Florida, which was among the hardest-hit states following the recent recession but is now a hotbed for employment growth relative to its peers. But they’re not having as much of a rebound in Baltimore, where there was only 1.9 percent private-sector job growth between October 2015 and October 2016, ranking 50th out of 106 cities. The findings are part of an American City Business Journals analysis based on the latest employment statistics for 106 major metros across…

Alewife, a bar and restaurant in downtown Baltimore, is for sale, although the current owner isn’t in any hurry to get out of Baltimore. Bryan Palombo opened Alewife in the former Eutaw Savings Bank in 2010 across the street from the Hippodrome Theatre. In the six years since, it has become popular for its large beer selection, burgers and duck fat fries. Palombo said he was approached by a broker about selling the business and while he is willing to stay and continue to run the restaurant, he…

Gov. Larry Hogan’s administration has submitted applications to the U.S. Department of Transportation formally requesting funding for two transportation projects that were denied earlier this year. One of the applications requests $155 million for reconstruction of the 121-year-old Howard Street Tunnel. The other calls for $76 million for new highway ramps off of Interstate 95 and roadwork surrounding the 266-acre Port Covington redevelopment. Submitting the applications was a formality. Hogan…
