Goucher College President José Antonio Bowen has accepted a five-year contract extension. Bowen, the school’s 11th president, has been at the helm of the 1,450-student private liberal arts school since July 2014. His new contract will run July 1, 2017 to June, 30, 2022. Goucher representatives did not disclose financial terms of the contract, but said Bowen has declined to accept any salary increases since he arrived at the Towson college and has continued that request in the new deal. “I am…

The cost of labor and health care is the most significant challenge for half of the small businesses that responded to a new M&T Bank survey. M&T’s Business Economic Outlook Survey shows that 50 percent of senior managers and owners of small businesses who participated in the internet survey identified labor, health care and other benefit costs as the most important challenge they face when compared to government regulations, business taxes or the process of hiring and retaining qualified workers. Looking to relocate your family or business, or both? Maryland may not be your best bet. The state ranked 26th in a study done by WalletHub measuring the best states to start and raise a family, ranking behind nearby states such as Delaware and Virginia. WalletHub, a Washington, D.C.-based research firm, has taken a crack at ranking the U.S. states for alignment with the economic and social metrics that families consider when identifying where to put down roots. An easy-in, easy-out lunch version of the Helmand restaurant in Mount Vernon opened this week in East Baltimore. The Karzai family, which has run the Helmand since 1989, did a soft opening of the Helmand Kabobi on Jan. 11 and opened to the public this week in the John G. Rangos Sr. Building at 855 N. Wolfe St. as part of the Science and Technology Park at Johns Hopkins. The restaurant is open for lunch service between 11 a.m.-3 p.m., but the family is looking to obtain a liquor license and add…
