Shoppers head out in hoards across the country starting Thursday night, officially kicking off the busiest time of the year for retailers. Big-box retailers such as Target and Walmart opened earlier than ever — 6 p.m. Thursday — for Black Friday shopping. Others, like HH Gregg, decided to wait to open until Friday morning, the traditional time when stores open early to mark the start of the holiday shopping season. In all, about 137.4 million consumers are expected to shop at some point this…

In tiny Pigtown, located on Baltimore’s southwestern border, merchants along Washington Boulevard are planning to celebrate their retail roots like never before. In Fells Point, many small businesses and restaurants are hoping that this holiday shopping weekend will be the turning point in what they have bemoaned a slowdown in sales stemming from the city’s unrest after the death of Freddie Gray in police custody in April 2015 and major construction along Thames Street. “We are praying for a miracle,"…

The Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation has been producing student and alumni-run startups since it launched at the University of Baltimore in 2006. The center housed 12 startups last year, and companies and entrepreneurs brought in a total of about $1.4 million in revenue. But John Zuknick, manager of Center for Entrepreneurship, realized the workspace available to student entrepreneurs was not conducive to the kind of collaborative, open environment he thought they needed to grow. To try…

Despite upcoming leadership changes in the city and federal government, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is still confident an agreement to change city police practices can be reached by Baltimore and the U.S. Department of Justice. Negotiations have been ongoing between the two sides to implement changes since the Department of Justice released a scathing report in August accusing city police officers of using outdated tactics and of discriminating against minority residents. With Mayor-elect Catherine…

On Main Street in Ellicott City this week, Sara Arditti set up a table to sell bright costume jewelry, handmade ornaments and even posters that say “Make Art Not War.” Nearby, candy maker Steve McDermott peddles chocolate and vanilla fudge while Megan Clark straightens up a stable of toy horses and unicorns at Ellicott City Toyland and Charlene Townsend displays crystal and china plates at Maxine’s Antiques and Collectables. These merchants admit they are survivors. As Small Business Saturday approaches,…
