Good design comes in all kinds of packages, but the best ones are always mirrored by great stories. Truthfully, you can’t have one without the other. Between myself and the previous design editor, Wendy Goldfarb, the No. 1 goal for every publication in 2016 was to figure out the best way to tell our stories visually. The buzzword for this type of design thinking is information architecture. It’s how one presents different layers of a story within an entire package. And that’s how we narrowed…

The most attractive mates in America grow up in Bethesda, apparently. Hinge, a dating app with over 2 million downloads, compiled data this month from its users to determine which hometowns produced the most attractive people, based on average number of connections through the app. The app is designed to help users connect over shared interests such as movies, books or experiences by dropping them into other users’ stories, in which people have responded to a series of questions and posted photos. Bethesda…

It’s down but not out. That is the verdict on the future of the no-frills Brutalistic style of architecture in Baltimore during a year when yet another of the concrete landmarks was razed. In November, workers began to pulverize the Brutalistic McKeldin Fountain in McKeldin Plaza adjacent to Harborplace to make way for a newer, greener public park. The demolition was the ultimate resolution of a decade-long crusade by Kirby Fowler, president of the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, to take it…

If you are planning on heading to MGM National Harbor for New Year’s Eve, you better have reservations or tickets in advance — or have plans to purchase special passes. The resort will ring in 2017 with special events, including a Duran Duran concert in the MGM Theater. Patrons will need a show ticket or a special resort-wide ticket to gain access to MGM, National Harbor General Manager Bill Boasberg said. Visitors must be 21 or over and will need advance restaurant reservations or must be…

Former employees at the Canton Dockside have filed a class-action lawsuit against the crab house for over $250,000 in lost wages and back pay. The two waitresses, Christine Jackson and Megan Blankenship, claim the restaurant’s owner, Eric Hamilton, failed to pay them the minimum wage for almost four years and did not pay overtime, even when they worked over 40 hours in a week, according to court records. The lawsuit comes as another Canton restaurant, the Speakeasy Saloon, had to file for Chapter…

Good morning. I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays this weekend. For those of you who are at the office this week, at least you have another three-day weekend to look forward to. Today is going to be unseasonably warm with rain off and on all day. Here are eight things to know as you get back into the swing of things. The Ravens were eliminated from playoff contention on Christmas, losing a thriller to the Pittsburgh Steelers, 31-27. The win gave the Steelers the AFC North title, and with the…

Hoping to speed up service and improve security, sweetgreen is becoming one of the first fast-casual chains to go cashless. The salad chain, which was founded in D.C. by Georgetown University alums but moved its headquarters to Los Angeles earlier this year, will soon accept payment only via its app or credit card, reported Business Insider. Beginning in March, all sweetgreen locations in Maryland, Virginia and D.C. will stop accepting cash, while its locations in New York, California, Illinois…
